A Hidden
Treasure in South Orange

Although it’s just a few hundred feet from bustling South Orange
Avenue, the town’s most historic building remains hidden from view.
Behind the police station parking lot, obscured by fences and
brambles, the Old Stone House is also hidden from public awareness.
Few people know that South Orange is home to one of the earliest
buildings in New Jersey. Few people know the history of the Old
Stone House, or the sad story of what has become of it in recent

Hi there! My
name is Kyla, and I’m writing about the Old Stone House. A lot of us
don’t know what or where it is, including me until I went to a small
lesson at the South Orange Public Library. Once I actually did learn
about it, I became positively fascinated, as I’m sure you will be
too, once you read this essay. For starters, before I dive in to a
history of this marvelous house, I find it important to preserve our
landmarks, and believe it or not, this is a landmark of our town.

Old Stone House

Stone House at Stone Brook
is located at South Orange Avenue. You may see that it is behind the
South Orange Police Station and Senior Citizen Home. The Stone House
is a single family home. The original structure was a simple one and
a half story Dutch, regional style building, constructed with
natural stone.
