and Old Stone
House
Few people realize that the Dutch settled New Jersey and New York
as part of its “new Netherlands” settlement before the English took over
the province. In recognition of the period of Dutch settlement in the
1600s, SOHPS will have a panel of speakers discuss possible adaptive
re-uses of one of this era’s oldest relics, the Old Stone House, built
circa 1680, here in South Orange. They are experienced in adaptive use
of historic buildings, having achieving same for other sites in the
region.
There will be a presentation of the bronze plaque commemorating the
fact that the Stone House has been listed on the State and Register of
Historic Places. Invited dignitaries include Secretary of State Nina
Mitchell Wells and Assemblywoman Mila Jasey.
This will be a small, informal event, with short presentations, and
a question and answer period, with Dutch treats and hot chocolate at a
reception afterward.
