William Augustus Brewer

Prominent member of Holy Communion Church which pre-dated the joining with St. Andrews Church. The Church then became St. Andrews and Holy Communion Church

Purchased Old Stone House in 1867.

Oldest datable structure extant in Essex County – predating 1680.

Erected the front elevation an addition of modern design and architecture putting additions on at the rear leaving the old house practically in original form.

Gave the Old Stone House the name of AULDWORTH (old mansion)

Pres of Village 1875-77

Pres of South Orange Library Association

Due to his skill, became an actuarial for Mutual Life Insurance Co of NY

Then became actuary for Washington Life Insurance Co of NY in 1860 –eventually becoming President

A founding member of the New England Society of America ,eventually becoming officers in various roles such as Treasurer, VP and Pres

His daughter went onto become spouse of Eugene Connett (see below)

1881, appointed by Court of Common Pleas as one of the “commissioners of drainage,” whose function it was to provide means for draining the East Branch of the Rahway River. The area, along with the brook near his home, was swampy, breeding mosquitoes suspected of carrying typhoid fever. As part of the Commissions work, Brewer saw to draining of Stone House Brook swampy area and donated what is now Grove Park to the Village for public use.

 

Others who were significant members of the church:

-          Eugene Connett

Member of Village BOT twice Village Pres. When Meadowland Society was formed in 1889 to prevent development of open land from industrialization was first to subscribe to Society. In 1895, Connett donated land at corner of Scotland Rd and Taylor Place for construction of library building  

-          William Baird, Jr.

Served as Pres Board of SO Community House. It was renamed after him for his efforts. He was a philanthropist who oversaw the Community House as it was originally used for the Welfare and Social needs of children and families

-          William Baird, Sr.

-        Instrumental in obtaining for SO the large tract of land known as Meadowland Park from Meadowland Society to make it a public park

-          Active in Civic Affairs  -          Spenser Miller 

-          Chair of the Village Commission draining waters in Village   

-          Completed Cameron Field Project

-          William Allen

-          Secretary of Railroad Commission – inventor of Railway Time Zones

-          Pres of the Meadowland Society he organized the South Orange Field Club in 1889 to encourage outdoor sports.

-          As such, he supported Rev Lewis Cameron’s establishment of a playground    as there was no place for them to play except in the streets

-          Francis Spier

-          Chairman of Joint Sewer Project in 1900. Subsequently developed 159 mile joint trunk sewer plan reducing the incidence of typhoid fever

-          In 1912, due to deaths at grade crossing for the Lackawanna RR, Spier asked for the Village to present a plan to reduce injuries/deaths.

-          In 1914 the RR adopted the plan and rebuilt the right of way  as well as the station in the Village    

-          Cornelius van Schaick Roosevelt

-          Owned 67 acres of land at Ridgewood near St. George’s Church extending west to Wyoming Ave and from Durran Rd to Curtis Place – the estate called The Hickories. Later developed,  the nephew of the properties owner (Theodore Roosevelt, Jr) spent many vacations on the property.

-          Rev Lewis B Cameron (1895-1909)

-          Rector of Church of St. Andrews and Holy Communion Church was the visionary behind setting up a playground.

-          First organizer of baseball in South Orange  and the park was named at his death Cameron Field in his honor. It was to be named Abraham Lincoln Park (the idol or Rev Cameron)  but was dedicated to Rev Cameron because of his tireless efforts on behalf of children

-          Ronald Hoskier (1917)

-          Son of Vestryman HC Hoskier for Holy Communion Church. The junior Hoskier was one of the first casualties of WWI who was killed during battle and is buried in full honors in Paris as a member of the French Lafayette Escadrille – the American section of the French Aviation Corps.
