Scholarship
Application Guidelines
Minimum Eligibility Criteria
To
qualify for the scholarship, an applicant must:
Be
a resident of the Village of South Orange
Be
a member of the Columbia High
School graduating class of 2008
Provide proof of acceptance to an accredited
college, university or institute of higher learning
Complete and return the scholarship application
Complete and submit an approved theme based essay
Directors, board members, committee members and
employees of the South Orange Historical and
Preservation Society, and their immediate family
members are not eligible to apply for this
scholarship.

in the office of
Mr. Chris Preston, Social Studies Supervisor -
Office B 201.
Award
The Society's volunteer scholarship committee will
award a $1000.00, non-renewable, scholarship to one
Columbia High
School graduating senior.
Applicants will be considered on the basis of
community service, scholastic performance,
leadership and the contents of a theme based essay.
Essay Theme
The theme for the 2008 essay is, “The Regional and
National Significance of The South Orange Train
Station (Sloan Street).”
Essay Rules

Essays must contain a minimum of 2000 words

Entrants are limited to one submission
-
Entries must be original, unpublished works,
written entirely by the entrant
-
Entries must be typewritten
Essays will be judged based on the focus and
originality of material, as well as the conclusions
and recommendations, style and mechanics, and
quality of expression in your essay.

essays must be submitted by 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday,
May 28, 2008 to:

Announcement
The recipient of the 2008 South Orange Historical
and Preservation Society Scholarship will be
notified by telephone and email on Monday, June 2,
2008. The Scholarship will be presented to the
winner on Wednesday, June 4,
2008, during the Columbia High
School Senior Awards Night program, 7:00 p.m.
in the High School Auditorium.
