Schedule

The Scholarship application will be given to Mr. Preston (District History head) early next week.
 Wednesday, June 28, 3:30 p.m. - Scholarship deadline.  Joanne will pick up essays from Mr. Preston at Columbia H. S.
Please note the following schedule for our committee.
   
Wednesday, June 28th after 4:00 pm Distribute essays to be read by committee members.  Please plan on dropping by my home after 3:30 to pick up a group of applications/essays to review. 
   
Friday, June 30th - Committee meeting 
6:30 pm at my home.  Please bring  6 copies of each of your best applications/essays for review by the committee.
 
Sunday, June 1st - Committee meeting- 2:00 p.m. at my home. Select final winner.
   
Monday, June 2nd -  Scholarship winner is notified by telephone and email.
   
Wednesday, June 4th Columbia High School Senior Awards Night - 7:00 p.m. - Committee in attendance.
  Professional attire. Photos of Committee and winner will be taken for press by Nancy Heinz Glaser.

 

2008 South Orange Historical and Preservation Society (SOHPS)

Scholarship Application Guidelines

 

Minimum Eligibility Criteria

 

To qualify for the scholarship, an applicant must:

 

Be a resident of the Village of South Orange

Be a member of the Columbia High School graduating class of 2008  

Provide proof of acceptance to an accredited college, university or institute of higher learning

Complete and return the scholarship application

Complete and submit an approved theme based essay

 

Directors, board members, committee members and employees of the South Orange Historical and Preservation Society, and their immediate family members are not eligible to apply for this scholarship.

 

Application

 

Application forms are available at Columbia High School, in the office of Mr. Chris Preston, Social Studies Supervisor - Office B 201.

 

Award

 

The Society's volunteer scholarship committee will award a $1000.00, non-renewable, scholarship to one Columbia High School graduating senior.

 

Applicants will be considered on the basis of community service, scholastic performance, leadership and the contents of a theme based essay. 

 

Essay Theme

 

The theme for the 2008 essay is, “The Regional and National Significance of The South Orange Train Station (Sloan Street).”

 

Essay Rules

 

  • Essays must contain a minimum of 2000 words
  • Entrants are limited to one submission
  • Entries must be original, unpublished works, written entirely by the entrant
  • Entries must be typewritten

Essays will be judged based on the focus and originality of material, as well as the conclusions and recommendations, style and mechanics, and quality of expression in your essay.

 

 

Submission and Deadline

 

Completed applications and essays must be submitted by 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28, 2008 to:

Announcement

 

The recipient of the 2008 South Orange Historical and Preservation Society Scholarship will be notified by telephone and email on Monday, June 2, 2008.  The Scholarship will be presented to the winner on Wednesday, June 4, 2008, during the Columbia High School Senior Awards Night program, 7:00 p.m. in the High School Auditorium.
