The South Orange Historical and Preservation Society has announced
an open house and talk on April 27, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the home of
Jim and Mary Kay Mitchell, in South Orange.
All are welcome to this gracious historic home, built in the English
Tudor style in 1898. The house, located at 166 Ralston Avenue,
features a large, oak- paneled hallway with stained- glass windows
gracing the stairway. There are three spectacular brick and
carved-wood fireplaces on the first floor alone. The home will
provide a wonderful setting for this free event, which will include
a light buffet.
As part of the afternoon’s activities, the
South Orange Historical and Preservation Society will present a
lecture given by Jimmy Ma, owner of Ma’s Glass and Art Studio in
East Orange. Ma is a professional stained-glass restoration artist
and has worked on projects at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Trinity
Church in New York, as well as the Princeton University Chapel,
which was the largest restoration project of its kind in the United
States. He will speak on the history of stained glass in the Eastern
United States and discuss methods of stained glass restoration.
The South Orange Historical and Preservation Society was formed in
1986. The goal of the organization is to further the study of the
history and architecture of the village of South Orange. Membership
and attendance at meetings are open to anyone interested in
furthering our mission and goals. Memberships are available at
several levels and entitle members to our newsletter, as well as
discounted admission to our house tour and other events. Membership
materials will be available along with displays and other
information about the organization.
