| SOHPS Mission South Orange Historical and Preservation
Society (SOHPS) was formed in 1986. The goal of the organization is to further
the study of the history and architecture of the Village of South Orange, New
Jersey.
We strive to:

Provide programs to disseminate historical, preservation and
architectural information.

Support preservation activities within the Village of South Orange.

Support the recognition of landmark buildings and historic
neighborhoods.

Promote adaptive reuse of significant historic structures rather
than abandonment or demolition.
Current Primary objectives
- developing outreach programs to all the
businesses, historical societies, churches, schools and universities
within South Orange and the surrounding areas.
- developing educational programs of
historic significance for our local communities, libraries and
school curriculums and educational environments
- preservation of significant historic
structures - the Old Stone
House, located adjacent to the South Orange Police station.

participation in all events and SOHPS activities.
Past Project Programs
The society has worked on preserving and supporting
awareness on a number of historical structures and programs within South Orange,
New Jersey, including:
- South Orange Movie, “Once
Upon a Gaslight” produced by Nancy Heins-Glaser
- Placement of Tony Smith
Sculpture
- Rebuilding the South
Orange Fire Station
- Baird Community Center
- Village Hall Photo
